They hadn’t settled in, so all they needed to do was roll up the sleeping blankets. With backpacks over their shoulders, they marched up onto deck. Aetus led them to a small lifeboat that waited.

“It took you long enough,” he said as the travelers settled uncomfortably into the lifeboat. “There’s food, and fishing gear if you need more.”

Jaelin spoke up. “What should we do, build a fire in the boat or eat the catch raw?”

“It’s up to you.” Aetus ignored her glare. “These are heavily populated waters. Someone’ll find you sooner or later. If not, you’re about a week away from land.”

As the lifeboat was lowered, Aetus smiled weakly at Airk. “This doesn’t ruin our friendship, does it?”

The cold gaze returned to him would have sent shivers down a polar bear’s spine. When the small boat hit the water, Airk and Wray began to row. The outlaw didn’t bother to glance back.
