“Aagghh!” He spun around, expecting to find one of the monsters had escaped and stood behind him, ready to devour him in one gulp. But it was only Shaela, pulling him back from the edge.

The others had already reached the far side of the bridge and now stood by the cast iron door. Shaela took Kitt’s hand and led him along, hurrying to cross. They’d almost reached the others when the bridge began to groan.

It started as a tiny creaking but grew louder, and soon the bridge began to sway. Shaela lifted Kitt and ran. Behind her came a loud thwap!From the safety of the doorframe, Estelle and Jaelin screamed.

Airk rushed onto the drawbridge, sword in hand. As he ran past Shaela, he gave her a push towards the door—Dreux caught her as she stumbled, and Kitt landed safely in the Baret’s arms. Shocked, Shaela turned around.
