In one swift motion, it was over, and the two lovers lay dead together on the stones.

With heavy steps and heavier hearts, the remaining four reached the top of the stairs tired and out of breath. As much as they needed to stop and rest, to mourn those they’d lost, there simply was no time. Jaelin wanted to get out of this diseased and cursed palace as fast as she could; as if he sensed her urgency, the Baret spurred them on. Shaela seemed numb, unresponsive. After Airk’s fall, even Kitt couldn’t seem to penetrate her silence.

At the top of the stairs, a dark hallway led into the palace’s interior. Kitt held tight to Shaela’s hand as if guiding her along, but she trailed the others and he pulled ahead slightly to ask Jaelin, “What will we do about the Stones?”

The Princess patted his head. “Let us worry about that.” Closing the distance between herself and Wray, she asked, “What will we do about the Stones?”

He smiled. “We’ll think of something. We’ll have to.”
