Jonathon Carver, a young Puritan school teacher, meets handsome Nathaniel Morgan, master cooper. Awakening

“Is it not to your liking?” she said tentatively, probably noticing that he ate slowly.


“There is something bothering you, then? Is it last night? Was I too forward? Have I offended you?” She seemed on the brink of tears.


“Oh, dear Rebecca, no.” Jonathan rose and went to her. He could not let her feel his distracted mood had anything to do with her personally. He knelt on one knee and took her hands in his and kissed them. She removed one hand and stroked his hair.


He returned to his seat, making an effort to be more aware and lighter in continence. “I must admit I was a little taken by surprise.” He smiled.


Rebecca laughed softly. “I hope that you found our lovemaking to your liking,” she said with lowered eyes.
