Chapter 37

The Reverend Matheson had made Rebecca’s scripture selection into a moral lesson that condemned sexual activity outside the bounds of marriage to a death sentence, but extolled its virtues to the high heavens once the nuptial ‘noose’ was in place.

“No,” said Nathaniel out loud. “Marriage is good. It is needed. I should not be so crass.”

He took another drink of the amber liquor.

What was to be done? The plan was dashed. Jonathan was now married for life. Could they have any chance of love now? He felt as if he should be angry with Jonathan for abandoning their plan. He found he could not. He did not know the circumstances of what had happened that night. He did not feel betrayed, only deeply saddened.
