The Reverend Matheson had made Rebecca’s scripture selection into a moral lesson that condemned sexual activity outside the bounds of marriage to a death sentence, but extolled its virtues to the high heavens once the nuptial ‘noose’ was in place.

“No,” said Nathaniel out loud. “Marriage is good. It is needed. I should not be so crass.”

He took another drink of the amber liquor.
