Chapter 20

“I hope he wasn’t any trouble?” Paul asked.

“None at all,” I said.

We gave Paul a brief rundown of the events of the past 24 hours. I could tell he was surprised Sam had cooked us breakfast. His surprise quickly turned to pride. I could almost see Paul’s chest puff out.

“He really seems to have taken to you two,” Paul said.

“And we’ve really taken to him,” Mark replied. “We’d like him to come over sometime next weekend, if that’s all right with you.”

“No problem.” Paul hesitated for a moment. “I’m being really cheeky asking this, and trust me you can say no if it’s too much, but…” He squeezed his sponge, causing water to drip onto his white trainers.

“Yeah?” I prompted.

“Helen’s been a bit down, you know, since the baby came.”

“Sorry, I didn’t know that,” I said.

“Yeah. The doc said a couple of weeks away in the sun would do her the world of good.”

I nodded.
