Chapter 21

“But we’re stopping if things don’t work out,” I insisted.

Mark’s smile dimmed a little, but he nodded in agreement.

“I need to go on a refresher course before I start driving. I’ll dig out my copy of the Highway Code, though I think I remember the important bits.”

Mark cupped my groin. “These are the most important bits.”

I sighed dramatically. “One track mind.”

“Takes one to know one.”

I agreed and we raced each other to the bedroom.

After satisfying our urges, we both lay spent on the bed.

Mark gave me a slow kiss. “Things are really looking up for us. I’ve got a job, there’s your promotion, Sam coming to stay, and now the car. It’s all so, so…”

I kissed him back. “I know, my angel. It’s perfect.” I didn’t add that it was Mark being there which made it perfect. 5

The next evening Paul hailed me as I passed his house. As we enquired about each other’s day, the state of the weather and the economy, I could tell something was on Paul’s mind.
