The rest of the spring and early summer flew by, Sam crossing every day off on his wall calendar.

As expected, Mary got back with Jerry. He had realised, much to Mary’s relief, that gay people didn’t have horns growing out of their heads. He also learnt that not all gay people were limp-wristed or spoke with a lisp. We did go out on a double date. It was okay, but I wouldn’t put it any higher than that. Jerry behaved himself, no cross words or dirty looks were exchanged, but once it was over, Mark and I agreed it was an experience we weren’t keen to repeat. Pity, because Jerry was very attractive, and there was no doubt he doted on Mary.

One Sunday Mark answered the phone. It was my mother and, after a few words were exchanged, he handed the phone to me.
