Chapter 14

After Mrs.Bundy served her a light breakfast of toast and tea—light by Manx standards—Caroline set off on the coastal path, flanked by Samson and Delilah.“Take them with you,”Bundy said.“They go crazy without exercise.”

Caroline had the odd feeling Mrs.Bundy was glad to be rid of her.The old girl became quite irritable when she’d asked her about the scarf incident and her relationship to Billy. That night in the pub they seemed to greet one another as old friends.Had she known Billy long?Bundy answered with a shrug and a“not long,”but Caroline recognized a fib when she heard one.Caroline asked about Mrs.Bundy’s family, and she suddenly clammed up.Perhaps like some people,Bundy valued her privacy,so Caroline decided not to push further. She couldn’t fault her for not opening up to a complete stranger, especially in wartime. But still…something was there. But what?
