He thought for a minute and said, “Medical supply houses offer some specialized sleeve-like things that slide up over a cast and seal at the top, but they’re not cheap. I’d buy a bunch of ladies’ shower caps. A bunch of them because you’ll use one up every day. You cut a hole in the top of the cap and then slide it with the elastic side up over the cast until the elastic is above the top of the cast, then to make sure, you run some tape over the elastic. Next, you get a large fifty-five gallon plastic garbage bag, the kind with built-in plastic drawstrings, and snug it up his leg until the top if the bag is well under the shower cap. Then you draw the drawstrings tight, and finally, you take some tape and seal the area around the top of the garbage bag. Finally, you tape the shower cap securely to the garbage bag. It’s not 100 percent effective, but it works most of the time.”
