Chapter 39

Philip stood up, came over to the bed, kissed me, then turned and gave John a hug. Then he said, “What’s the good of having money if you can’t spend it helping your loved ones?” He kissed John on the cheek, released him, and turned around to kiss me again.

He turned back to John and said, “Of course, Joe might not want to do this.”

John got himself under control and said, “Oh, he will, he will, and if he’s the least bit reluctant, I have ways of persuading him to do what I want.”

Philip smiled at that and said, “I’ll just bet you do.”

John finished his duties and hurried out of the room, presumably to telephone Joe. I looked at Philip and said, “Like I told Dr. Taft this morning, you’re as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside.”
