Goodman said, “Shall I wait in the other room?”

“Goodman,” Charles said, “they made me use a bedpan in the hospital. This is the first time since last Friday morning that I’ve sat on the throne to take a dump like a normal human being, and I may just sit here all afternoon and enjoy it. Go back to whatever it was you were doing. Philip will call you when I’m through.”

Goodman, barely suppressing a smile, nodded and said, “Very good, Sir.”

I looked at Charles, said, “Enjoy,” and I started to leave the room.

“You don’t have to go.”

“I know, but I need to go downstairs and tell them that the nurses will be here around four. Besides, you’re not going anywhere for a while, so enjoy your dump in peace.”

I left before he could say anything, and went downstairs. I found Gran in the sunroom. She looked up when she heard me coming and said, “Is everything all right?”

“Yes, but we do have a small problem.”

“What is that, my boy?”
