I secured the front door and returned to the library, where Gran was still sitting. Lance was curled up at her feet.

I yawned and said, “Sorry about that, but it’s been a long day, and I haven’t slept in a real bed since Thursday night.” I poured myself another glass and offered a refill to Gran, who declined.

I said good night to her, then looked at Lance. “Come on, Lance, your bed is waiting for you.” He got up and followed me up the stairs and into what was now our room. Charles was on his back on top of the covers, fully dressed and out cold.

Lance was curled up on his bed, evidently sleeping soundly, and Charles hadn’t moved. I went to the bed, sat down on the edge of it, and kissed him.

When his eyes opened, I said, “Hi.”
