Chapter 61

“On it,” he said, and he brought my crutches over to the bed.

I was getting fairly proficient at swiveling around on the bed, so he was able to lower my cast to the floor with no problem. He gave me his good arm, and I pulled myself upright and grabbed the crutches.

“Now turn around,” he said, “and I’ll just push the chair into you from behind.”

It worked like a charm. He even managed to push the chair, although he had to bend his one arm at an odd angle to grasp both handles. I suppose I could have used the handrails on the wheels, but we were underway before I thought about it. Arriving downstairs, we found Gran in the sunroom in an easy chair, reading, as usual. Philip parked me next to a chair facing Gran and then sat down in that chair.

We were silent for a moment while she carefully marked her place with a bookmark and looked at us with a question in her eyes. Then she said, “You two have the look of someone with something on your mind.”
