The organ at the Church of the Redeemer had a movable console, and for the concert it was positioned between the choir pews at the head of the three steps leading from the floor of the sanctuary. The three-manual console was only a few years old, and the expression pedals (choir, swell, and crescendo) were faced with the same wood from which the console was constructed. Tom was accustomed to those particular controls having nonslip rubber coverings, so the wood took a bit of getting used to. The floor of the church was either stone or tile, and there were no cushions on the pews, which made for a rather live room. Tom had a morning and afternoon session on the organ Friday, but he cut the afternoon session short so that they could go back to their hotel and unwind before the concert. Noah knew that Tom’s grandparents were expected at the concert and was nervous about meeting them.
