AFTER HIS LAST class on the Monday following their return from New York, Tom went in search of Dr. Ambrose. He found her in her office, knocked on the open door, and said, “Got a minute?”

“I have the rest of the day, if you need it,” she said, gesturing to one of the chairs opposite her desk.

“It’s only two thirty. I don’t think it’ll take quite that long.”

He settled down in the chair and paused for a minute to decide how to tell her what was on his mind, but she saved him the trouble.

“Something’s obviously on your mind,” she said. “Don’t keep me in suspense.”

“Do you remember me telling you about the Lane family in Boston?”

“Certainly.”

“Mrs. Lane sent Noah and me tickets to two performances at the Met.”

“That was a generous gesture.”

“You don’t know how generous. We had box seats in the Parterre.”

“That’s extremely generous. I know what those seats used to cost, and my information is years out of date.”
