“I’ll pass this along to the people who handle the details of these things,” she said.

“Thanks.”

“How’s our boy doing?”

“Physically, he’s just about recovered from the surgery. We’re working our way back up to our full exercise regimen, but we’re not quite there yet.”

“I sense an unspoken ‘but’ in there somewhere.”

“He took an intense dislike to New York and doesn’t ever want to live there, even part-time, which has given him second thoughts about a career in opera. Not that he was all that eager to do opera in the first place.”

“There are regional companies all over the country looking for talent.”

“That’s exactly what I told him, not to mention the fact that it’s a seasonal thing.”

“He made it to the finals this year,” she said. “If he does even better next year, he’ll be flooded with offers.”
