Chapter 85

“In this weather and with icy slush in every gutter? I don’t think so.”

“That settles it. Let’s step back inside and ask the host to call a taxi.”

“No need for that. I think the one pulling up to the curb is about to discharge some passengers—we can take it back to the hotel.”

The days seemed to fly by, what with rehearsals, more sessions with coaches, and more ancillary activities in connection with the broadcast concert than they would have thought possible. They were joined the morning before the event by Noah’s support group, consisting of his mother and her parents, and, to their surprise, Bobby and Chad.

“You guys skipped classes for this?” Noah said when Bobby and Chad showed up at the hotel. “You could have stayed home and watched the broadcast on television. Mom, Grandma, and Grandpa just went to their room to get ready for lunch.”

“Why would we do that when we can be here in person?” Bobby said. “It’s only two class days and our grades can stand it.”
