Chapter 56

I opened a bottle of Zinfandel for the adults and a bottle of Beaujolais for Roger and Steve. The two boys sipped the wine and made faces, and Steve summed it up, saying, “It’s all right, I guess, but I’d just as soon have a Coke.”

After dinner, I brought out a deck of cards, and we played hearts for a while. During a lull between hands, Steve said, “Uncle Charles, how do you go about setting up a scholarship?”

“It depends upon what kind of scholarship you’re talking about,” I said. “There are one-time scholarships, and there are annual scholarships funded by an endowment.”

“Steve and I want to do something in memory of Jimmy,” Roger said.

“He really got to you two, didn’t he?” Mason said.

“Yes, Sir, he did,” Steve said. “We wanted to think of some way that he would always be remembered, and came up with the idea for a memorial scholarship.”
