We sat in stunned silence, as did most of the spectators, and watched as the sheriff was laid out on the floor and someone attempted to revive him. Eventually, Angus directed his assistant to make his way back to us with a message.
“Mr. Barnett,” he said, “Mr. Ferguson said to let you know that Mr. Barnes is dead. One of the spectators is a retired doctor, and he seems to think the former sheriff had a stroke or some sort of seizure.”
“Please thank him for letting me know,” I said. He nodded and returned to the front of the room
“Well. That was certainly interesting,” Philip said.
“Yeah. Is everybody ready to head for the car?” I said.
We reached the rear entrance we’d been using and found Brian Scott and his cameraman waiting for us.
“Hello, Brian,” I said. “Were you inside the courtroom just now?”
“You bet I was. Mr. Barnett, would you folks like to comment on the events of the morning?”
