“I see,” Roger said.
“The story goes that Widor retired at the age of eighty-nine because he could no longer climb up the steps to the loft.”
“That’s kind of sad,” Steve said.
“Do you guys know what is meant by the term Renaissance man?” I said.
“Yes, Sir, we do,” Roger said. “Our English teacher talked about it a lot last year.”
“I’m impressed by that recitation, Charles,” Mason said.
“What can I say,” Charles said. “I’ve spent a lot of time studying the lives of my favorite composers, and I’ve been here before.”
We finished our tour of Saint-Sulpice and walked through the nearby Luxembourg Gardens, which were bursting with spring flowers. From there, we strolled along the Seine, across a bridge to the Louvre, and spent the rest of the afternoon marveling at the art on display.
