When we were snuggled together in bed, he looked at me. “Now, Sir,” he said, “I think it’s time you told me where you were and what you were doing the weekend of the murder.”

“Is it important?”

“Not particularly, but I admit to being consumed with curiosity.”

“Well, it’s really not very complicated. I spent the weekend in a suite at the Desoto Hilton in Savannah.”

“And?”

“I was with a married man. Not only is he married, but he’s about three years short of his thirtieth birthday.”

“And?”

“On that date, he’ll gain control of the principal of a trust fund created by his grandfather’s will. We’re talking millions and millions of dollars. His family is very conservative, very strict, and very religious. Any hint of scandal at this time would bring a flock of greedy relatives out of the woodwork to challenge his inheritance—it seems that there are some strings attached to it concerning character and morals, etcetera.”
