Chapter 12

Sally handed me a glass of iced tea and said, “Want to go to Publix after a bit? We need a few things.”

“Sure. Shit, I forgot to ask Zeke what he likes for breakfast.”

“Sweetie, from the way the two of you looked a while ago, breakfast in bed will probably be more than enough.”

“Do we have bacon and eggs?”

“Plenty of both.”

“Okay, then.”

She drove us to Publix, stopping by my credit union along the way so I could drop Tom’s check in the night depository. I picked up a few snack type things in Publix, just in case, even though I knew full well that when Zeke arrived, we’d go straight to bed and most likely stay there. When we got home, I called Norm to see how he was doing. When I told him that Zeb was pulling a double shift today, and that Zeke was spending the night with me, his response was predictable—“I wonder if Zeb would like some company tonight?”

“Only one way to find out—you’ve got his number.”

“Yeah. He’s at work, but there’s always voice mail.”
