Chapter 11

“SOME OF OUR GUYS took the Sergeant’s Examination a couple of months ago, and. Carl had the highest score—you know what that means.”

“Yeah, I do,” Clarence said. “I hate it when that happens.”

“Me too. He deserves the promotion, but I’ve got almost five years invested in training him to think like I do, and when he goes, I’ll have to start all over again and train somebody else.”

“That’s why they pay you the big bucks,” Captain Fuller said.

“That’s what Captain Bridges says, and I understand it, but where does it say that I have to like it?”

“It doesn’t, and you don’t,” Captain Fuller said. “Now, where do we stand on this double murder?”

Clarence and I took turns bringing him up to date.

“So you think this kid Tommy will turn up in Daytona this Friday?” the captain said.

“It’s the only lead we have at the moment, boss,” Clarence said.

“Have either of you seen the morning paper?” the captain said.

“No, Sir,” I said.
