“It may take a couple of weeks or so to set it up,” I said, “but it’s our best shot, unless we get lucky and stumble over him. In any case, we’re not going to visit his last known address with lights and sirens. We’re going to check him out very quietly and very discreetly. Sorry, Janet, you should be making this speech.”

“That’s okay,” she said.

“Think of it as my last chance to run the team. Starting tomorrow, I’ll be inheriting Captain Bridges’ other lieutenants and their teams, in addition to you guys. A lot of people are going to be watching to see if I play favorites because of my past association with this team, since I created it from scratch and it’s been my baby from day one. Letting go, even a little bit, isn’t going to be easy.”
