“Well?”
“Carl came out to the rest of the team.”
“Wow. How did that happen?”
I told him about the meeting and what had happened. “I think Carl surprised himself as much as he did the rest of us. It wasn’t premeditated; it just kind of slipped out.”
“What time is the big announcement tomorrow morning?”
“Nine o’clock. The brass will meet with the sheriff in the largest conference room, and it will be carried by closed-circuit television to the rest of the building. They wanted to have a mass meeting down at the Civic Auditorium, but you can’t just close down the entire office for a couple of hours.”
“I wish I could be there.”
“Surprise, surprise,” I said. “Sarah Bridges is going to meet you in the lobby of our building at eight forty-five. We’ve reserved seats for both of you. Better wear a jacket and tie, there might be pictures taken.”
“I guess you’ll be in uniform?”
“You bet. Which reminds me, I’d better go air it out so I don’t smell of mothballs.”
