“Have you talked to your boys about buying your lake house?” I said.
“That we have done, and they’ve agreed, probably because they’re looking forward to using our retreat in the mountains, once we find it.”

I ARRIVED AT MY new office an hour early the next morning, and by nine or thereabouts, I had everything set up to my satisfaction. Each of my new lieutenants had sent me an e-mail with a complete report attached, and I spent the rest of the morning familiarizing myself with details of their ongoing investigations. That afternoon, I spent an hour with Gregg Parker and an hour with David Boyer, getting a better handle on their current case loads. By the end of the second meeting, I’d acquired a satisfactory comfort level with the activities of my new staff.
