Chapter 59

Jacksonville, FL

MONDAY MORNING, I hadn’t been at my desk more than an hour when the phone rang. It was the desk downstairs, letting me know that a lawyer wanted to talk to me.

“Send him up,” I said.

When he arrived at my office, the lawyer introduced himself as Alberto Ruiz, saying that he represented Janet’s husband.

“Have a seat, Mr. Ruiz,” I said, “and tell me what I can do for you.”

He sat down and came to the point, saying, “My client, Mr. Sanchez, is thinking of filing police brutality charges against you people.”

“Indeed?” I asked. “Why?”

“He says you guys roughed him up the other day.”

“Let’s go to the conference room next door. I have something to show you.”

I led him to the conference room, turned on the television set, and popped a DVD in the player. “Watch and learn. This was filmed at Lieutenant Sanchez’s apartment on the day in question.”

The video showed the entire incident, from the time Luis opened the door until the time he was cuffed and led away.
