By the end of the meal, everyone was feeling quite comfortable, and I got the impression that a certain amount of bonding had taken place, although in truth it had probably been underway over the past few weeks, and the dinner had merely served to bring things to a head.


Mike and I drove Janet and Crystal to Janet’s apartment, and Janet insisted on showing us what she’d done with the place. I was amazed when I saw the apartment—she had truly turned an empty space into a nice little nest for herself, and Mike and I both told her so at length. We had a glass of wine with Janet and Crystal, and when we finally got home, we were both ready to crash. Thor had other ideas, and after we let him out in the backyard to take care of business, we spent some quality time on the floor playing with our ‘baby.’
