“Wow!” Chris said. “That sounds like a plan. Do you need a retainer?”

“From you, no. This is a family matter.”

“Quentin! All you have to sell is your time, and you don’t need to give it away, especially not to me. It’s not as though I can’t afford it—my grandparents left me their house and a considerable nest egg. I have a tenant in the house, and those rent payments arrive on time every month. Most of them are still in my savings account along with that nest egg.”

“Don’t worry about it, Chris. Just give me a couple of days to do some digging, okay?”

“Okay. I’ll leave it in your capable hands.”

“Great.”

Chris felt somewhat better as he headed home from Quentin’s office. If the man could accomplish what he’d outlined, Dr. Shively would be history soon enough.

A COUPLE OF MORNINGS later, Chris awoke to the sound of a ringing telephone. “Hello,” he said.

“Morning, buddy,” Mickey said. “Did I wake you?”
