Chapter 68

“They’re dead. The lawyer looked into that for me.”

Chris looked at Mickey for the first time since the conversation had begun and saw two things: Mickey was holding his hands below bed level so Chris’ mother couldn’t see them, and he was showing two thumbs up; then he nodded so faintly no one other than Chris could spot it.

“To make it legal, I’ll need to adopt him.”

“That’s not a problem; I’ll sign anything you ask, as long as I know that Teddy will be taken care of.”

“Teddy?”

“Theodore Roosevelt Barnes is his name, but he goes by Teddy.”

“I’d want to change it to Bottoms.”

“That’s fine. Your dad was a fine man. If only he hadn’t had that accident—”

Chris didn’t want to travel down that particular road, so he said, “Where is Teddy now? And does he know about all this?”

“Downstairs in the waiting room with your grandparents, and yes, he does.”

“How does he feel about going off to Florida and living with someone he doesn’t know?”
