“What social life? He really doesn’t have time for one. If it wasn’t for Brian, I don’t think Brody would have any social life at all.”

“Those two have always been very close,” Mrs. Turner said. She looked toward the kitchen and lowered her voice. “In fact, I’ve often wondered if they weren’t more than just best friends.”

“So what if they are,” Mr. Murphy said. “As long as they’re happy, what difference does it make.”

“It doesn’t bother you to think they might be… um, more than friends?” Mr. Turner said.

“They obviously love each other, William,” Mr. Murphy said. “Whether or not they express that love physically is none of our business. I’ve watched the two of them together for a long time now, and it’s obvious that they care for each other genuinely and deeply.”

IN THE KITCHEN, Brody stopped wiping down the island and stepped over to where Brian stood at the sink. He lowered his voice to a whisper. “Did you hear that?”
