Chapter 27

“Hi, Mom,” Tom said. “This is Noah. Noah, this is my mother.”

“Surely not,” he said. “This woman has to be your sister. She’s way too young and pretty to be your mother.”

“Flattery will get you…,” she said. “Believe me when I tell you it’s all smoke and mirrors. You’re the page turner, aren’t you? You’re cute as a button. That picture Tom sent me didn’t do you justice. Pleased to meet you at last.”

Before Noah could find his voice, a younger version of Tom’s mother appeared and said, “Hi, Tom.”

She, too, gave Tom a hug, and he introduced Noah to his older sister, Barbara.

“Sweetie, you were magnificent,” Mrs. Foster said. “Wasn’t he, Babs?”

“Oh yes,” Barbara said. “I was especially impressed with the improvisation. I’ve never really understood how you do that.”
