Chapter 28

“Thank you,” Noah said.

“This makes my little surprise all the more appropriate,” she said.

“What surprise?” Tom said.

“I just got a new car, and the title to my old car has already been transferred into your name.”

“The Bimmer?”

“The same.”

“Mom,” he said, “you didn’t have to do that.”

“SWEETIE, NOBODY HAS to do anything. I do what I choose to do. I’m sorry the son of a bitch I’m married to was a jerk and stopped helping you with school when you refused to jump through his silly hoops. Giving you my car allows me to make up for that in my own small way, not to mention the fact that it makes me feel good.”

“It pisses Dad off too,” Barbara said, “and that’s a plus.”

“Language, dear,” Mrs. Foster said.

“What will I do with the Volvo?”

“Sell it, of course,” she said. “Use the money for whatever you like.”

“I’ll buy it,” Noah said.

“Why would you want that old thing, Noah?” she said.
