Chapter 32

“I’m so glad you asked that question,” Tom said. “The powers that be have decided that we’re going to do a Solemn High Evensong with smells and bells on the last Sunday in January. Don’t look at me like that, it won’t mean that much extra work. We’ll simply recycle a few anthems from the past twelve months. The good news is that the youth choir will be doing the service the following Sunday, so you can sleep late for a change.”

“Speak for yourself,” Carol said. “My daughter’s in that choir.”

“Let your husband take care of it that Sunday,” Linda said.

“In your dreams,” Carol said. “My daughter will expect me to be in the congregation that morning.”

“You could always have a ‘headache’,” one of the men said from the back row.

“That only works with husbands, not children.”

When the laughter had subsided, Tom said, “Okay, kids, time to go to work. Christmas is almost upon us, and we need to be totally prepared.”
