“How did you know when to turn the pages? As far as I could tell, Tom wasn’t giving you any signals.”

“At that first concert, he had to nod his head at me,” Noah said, “but during the second one, I learned to anticipate exactly when he was ready for me to do it.”

“We’ve developed an amazing rapport when we’re on stage together,” Tom said. “Noah seems to almost read my mind as he follows the music.”

They were invited inside for a glass of iced tea before they drove home to Jacksonville, and they accepted the invitation. Mrs. Walker brought the tea into the living room on a tray, and when the four of them were settled, she said, “Noah, honey, your grandfather and I have something to say to you.”

“Yes, Ma’am,” Noah said, looking a tad nervous.

“We know you’re planning to work full time this summer, and that’s fine,” she said, “but when school starts next fall, we want you to quit that job and devote all your time to your studies.”
