Chapter 59

“Why?”

“Sometimes we get a little playful,” Noah said. “Lots of fun things to do in a shower as long as the hot water doesn’t run out.”

“Oh.”

“THERE’S A BOTTLE of wine and a corkscrew on the desk,” Tom said. “By the time you get it open, Noah and I will be ready.”

“Okay,” Bobby said.

They finished toweling themselves dry, went into the bedroom, and pulled on their shorts. Tom plumped up the pillows on their bed, and they lay back against the headboard, relaxing. Bobby handed them each a glass of wine.

“Noah,” Bobby asked, “what’s it feel like standing up in front of all those people singing?”

“I get a little nervous at first, but the minute I open my mouth and the first note comes out, I pretty much forget about everything except the conductor’s baton.”

“When you do solo work,” Tom said, “only two people exist in the universe, yourself and the conductor.”

“Have you sung solos, Tom?” Bobby said.
