“I’ve never had a surprise party before,” Noah said. “Thanks, guys. This is almost too much.” He was getting misty-eyed.


The six men quickly devoured the pizza and a bottle of wine. They settled down in the living room to polish off most of a second bottle of wine while they visited. After that, Noah opened his presents, and after they enjoyed the birthday cake and the ice cream, they sat in the living room with glasses of wine.


“This is the best birthday I’ve ever had,” Noah said, snuggling up against Tom on the sofa, “and I can’t thank you guys enough.”


They spent a fair amount of time sharing information about things that were happening in their various lives.


“Listening to you guys talk about all the stuff you’re doing makes me tired,” George said. “Don’t you ever take a vacation?”
