“We both taught at Juilliard for many years,” the man said, “and now we reside in the DC area.”

“Your improvisation on the telephone number was marvelous,” his wife said, “and it brought back so many memories. When we were very young, we heard the blind pianist Alec Templeton improvise on a telephone number on several occasions. It was one of the things for which he was famous.”

“That was a bit before my time,” Tom said, “but I’ve read about him. That’s where I got the idea.”

Noah, who was standing by Tom, said, “If you taught at Juilliard, you may know my teacher, Dr. Ambrose.”

“Agnes Ambrose?” the man said.

“Yes, Sir,” Noah said.

“We knew her well for many years,” the man said, “but we lost touch after she moved to Florida.”

“She’s head of the music department at the University of North Florida,” Noah said.

“Be sure and remember us to her when you get home,” the man said.

“I certainly will,” Noah said.

They asked Tom for a card, and he gave them one.
