“We decided not to do that,” Mike said, “because our cabin was the first thing we acquired as a couple and because we planned to be there fairly regularly.”

“Yeah,” George said. “We spend one weekend a month there, as well as two weeks in June, a week in October, and long weekends during Thanksgiving and Christmas.”

“If we rented the cabin when we’re not there,” Mike said, “we’d have to keep our clothes and personal stuff locked up all the time. Not to mention the non-perishable grocery items in the kitchen.”

“By the way, Tom,” George said, “you’re probably going to hear from the prosecutor Monday or Tuesday. I heard through the grapevine today that a trial date has been set for Noah’s father.”

“Good,” Tom said. “I’m ready to testify against the bastard.”

“Don’t hold your breath,” George said. “He could very easily cop a plea and get a suspended sentence or something like that, particularly if he has no prior criminal record.”
