Chapter 86

“This is the rental house, isn’t it?” Noah said.

“Yep.”

“I give,” he said. “Why are we here?”

“Because the tenant’s lease is up, and he vacated yesterday. I want to show you the house, and I need to inspect it before I refund his security deposit.”

“Okay.”

Tom unlocked the front door, and they stepped into a small foyer. “Dining room to the left,” Tom said, “living room to the right.”

Across the foyer from where they stood were steps leading to a landing about halfway up. Noah could see steps continuing up to the right. A door to the right of the stairs was open, revealing a small powder room. Tom led him to the right, where the large living room extended to the back of the house. They walked through a pair of French doors at the side of the living room.

“This is the sunroom,” Tom said.

The room was large and pleasant, with a row of windows marching around three sides.

Tom said, “Come on.”
