Chapter 92

“We’ll be right where?” Noah said, more than a little sleepily.

“That was Carl,” Tom said. “We’ve got to get dressed now.”

“Why?”

“Go splash some water on your face and I’ll tell you.”

He followed Noah into the bathroom, grabbing his clothes as he passed through the closet. He ran the cold wet washcloth over his face as soon as Noah had finished using it.

“What’s going on?” Noah said.

“There’s been a shooting.”

“Who? Where?”

“Carl said one of our renters just shot and killed an intruder, and he thinks it might be your dad. He wants us to come over there and identify him.”

“Oh, shit, this is because Bobby came out, isn’t it?”

“Probably. Just focus on one thing—it isn’t your fault—no guilt trip. Promise me.”
