“Oops, indeed,” Noah said. “There was a lot of shouting, and some threats were made, but Bobby grabbed his stuff and left, so he couldn’t tell us what was said after that.”

“Do you know what kind of threats?”

“Mostly against Tom and me. I think they blamed us for ‘turning Bobby queer’. I can ask him to call you later today.”

“Please do that,” Carl said, handing Noah a card. He peered closely at Noah. “Are you sure you’re all right?”

“I just need some TLC.”

“I’ll take care of that as soon as I make a phone call,” Tom said.

Carl thanked them and left. Tom secured the house and refilled their glasses, and they went upstairs to the sleeping porch. They settled down with their wine, and Tom used his cell phone to make the call.

“Hello, Mr. Walker,” he said. “This is Tom Foster. … I’m sorry to disturb you at this hour, but there’s something you need to know.”
