“Yes, Sir,” Tom said. “There’s a two-car garage with a two-bedroom apartment over it. In this neighborhood, it commands a premium rent.”

“Is the man that William shot doing all right?” Mrs. Walker said.

“We went to see him today,” Noah said, “and he’ll be home in a day or so. It was just a flesh wound.”

“You went to see him?” Mrs. Walker said. “Did you know him?”

“We only met him when he signed the lease on the house,” Noah said, “but I wanted to apologize to him for what happened. It never occurred to us to warn the tenants about Dad.”

“Is your friend George really ‘high on the totem pole’, as you said?” Mrs. Walker said.

“George reports to one of three chiefs, and the chiefs report directly to the sheriff,” Noah said. “It doesn’t get much higher than that. He doesn’t talk about his accomplishments, but Mike told us that George is the youngest captain they’ve ever had, and before that, he was the youngest lieutenant.
