“WILLIAM AND I owned the house as joint tenants with right of survivorship, and the mortgage was paid off five years ago,” she said. “As soon as I can have it cleaned up, it’s going on the market.”

“Mom,” Bobby said, “won’t you need money?”

“As part of the divorce settlement, your father was required to maintain a half-million-dollar life-insurance policy with me as the beneficiary. That policy had a double indemnity clause, so I’ll be in great shape, financially speaking.”

“What’s a double indemnity clause?” Bobby said.

“That means the policy pays double if the insured dies accidentally.”

“Wow,” Bobby said, “I guess you will be okay. You won’t even have to work.”

“I’ll probably buy a small house near Mom and Dad, and the rest of the money will go in the bank,” she said. “I’m enjoying teaching again after all those years as a housewife, and I intend to keep on doing so for quite a while.”
