Chapter 20

It was our first Christmas together, and very special. David and I had purchased identical rings for each other, and we exchanged them beside the tree that evening.

“This is absolutely the best Christmas I’ve ever had,” David said.

“Me too.”

We got up very early Christmas Day, said good-bye to our hosts, and pointed the car east toward Charlotte. Our early start enabled us to pull up into the Majors’ driveway around ten. Mrs. Majors apologized profusely for making us share the double bed in David’s old room but smiled when I said, “Ma’am, when you’ve had to share a tiny two-man tent in the desert with two other guys, a bed this big for two is a luxury.”
