Chapter 58

“Really?” I said.

“Why don’t you trade both of your cars in on something a bit larger, but still relatively thrifty. If you think you need two cars, my car sits idle most of the time.”

“What will you use?” Kevin said.

“Sometimes you don’t act very smart,” she said. “You boys always drive to work in one car. So there’ll be one car left in the driveway every day instead of two. And I’ll save a bundle when you take over the insurance on it.”

“Works for me,” I said. “Kevin?”

“Sure, why not? We can go shopping this weekend. We can probably get a deal on a year-old car with low mileage and a lot of warranty left on it.”

“Come over here and sit down for a minute,” Grandma said. “While we’re talking about money, there’s something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about.”

We moved to the other end of the porch, sat on the sofa, and Kevin said, “What’s up?”

“I went to see Mr. Cooper the other day,” she said.

“You did?” Kevin said.
