“Are you boys okay to drive?” Russell said.

“After what happened in the airport, the adrenaline will be pumping for hours,” David said. “We’re not likely to get sleepy anytime soon.”

“You drive, then,” I said. “I’m gonna see if I can get Charles on the phone.”

“Better call Grandma first,” he said, “and give her our new ETA.”

“Yeah,” I said, “why didn’t I think of that? We can both talk to Anthony at the same time.”

“Good,” he said, “the kid probably needs all the reassurance we can give him.”

I turned the speaker on and speed-dialed our house. “Hello,” Grandma said after a few rings.

“Hi, Grandma,” I said.

“Kevin, where are you?” she said. “I thought you’d at least be in the air by now.”

“There was a problem with our flight,” I said, “so Russell let us take Harriet’s car, and we’re on the road.”

“You’re driving?” she said. “Why?”

“That’s a long story,” I said. “We’ll see you in six hours or maybe a bit less if traffic is light. Can we talk to Anthony?”
