“Water,” both women said.
I went to the kitchen, found a pitcher, and filled it with ice and water. Placing it on a tray with glasses, I carried it back to the den, where I found the two women deep in conversation.
“Where do we go from here, boss?” Janet said when she saw me.
“Tell you in a minute.”
I took my cell phone out and dialed a number. After a pause, a familiar gruff voice said, “Bridges.”
“George here, boss.”
“I know that. Haven’t you ever heard of caller ID? What’s up? Something good, I hope.”
“You bet,” I said, and filled him in.
He listened carefully and asked a few questions. “Okay, George, what do you want from me?”
“There are enough leads here to keep the team busy for the rest of the weekend, if you’ll authorize the overtime.”
“Go for it, as much as you need.”
“Thanks, boss.”
“Bring me up to date Monday.”
As usual, he hung up without formalities.
