Chapter 45

“You’ve met my friend Deborah?”

“Once, I think.”

“She figured it out and told me about it a couple of weeks ago.”

“And?”

“When I saw him in the recovery room, with tubes and wires all over the place, I realized that I loved him too. I don’t know why it took me so long to figure it out.”

“Good for both of you. I may be an old lady, and I was certainly raised in a different time and place. That being said, I’ve seen enough of life to know that when two people love each other, nothing else matters. Not even the fact that they’re of the same gender. I’ve watched the two of you working in the yard together, and I always thought there was something between you.”

“I wonder why it took me a decade or more to figure it out?”

“There’s no way to know that, George. Just accept what you’re given, and ‘go with the flow’, as the young people say. They do still say that, don’t they?”

I had to chuckle. “Probably. I’m a little out of touch with ‘young’ people, myself.”
